It was the last day of my trip and the pressure was on. I needed a fish for dinner with my wife the following day. The weather finally let me fish the Neuse so I launched out of Bridgeton at first light. The only problem was that this was my first fish of the Neuse this time of the year and I didn't have a solid plan.

I headed up river on the Bridgeton side to a spot where I had marked large fish in the past, but could never hook up. After 2 hours of fishing with no large marks and only one missed strike, it was time for another plan. I decided to fish the New Bern side of the river. During the crossing, I saw another boat heading up the New Bern side. It looked like Captain Gary of Spec Fever. Things were looking up if he had the same plan!

As I followed the other boat up the river my finder lit up as did his since he slowed to fish. As I passed I realized it was not Gary so I went a little further up river and started to fish. Hooking up with a 16 inch Striper on my first cast didn't go unnoticed by the crew of the other boat. A guy yelled over to me asking if that was a Shad? I said uh no I'm fishing for Stripers. He chuckled and said they were fishing Rockfish too. He joked that a fish on the first cast was bad luck.

After about 20 minutes of fishing and no catching we drifted close again and he repeated his joke about the bad luck, so I joked back and told him he was right and they better move on. About 10 minutes they took my advice and headed further up the river. 5 minutes after they left, I landed this nice heavy fish. In the end the joke was on them.

My current fishing kayak is a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 100. I'm thinking about upgrading to a NuCanoe Frontier or Jackson Coosa.
Swimming Mullet
Gulp Swimming Mullets are my goto bait for most situations.
Heavier Rattletraps are still one of my favorite lures for stripers.
Green with Black Spots
I've been throwing Jitterbugs for Bass since the 1970's and don't plan on stopping anytime soon.
Tierra 1500
The Team Daiwa Tierra 1500 reel is one of my favorites, I've got 4 or 5 of them at this point. Too bad they've been discontinued.
My primary target is Striped Bass in the 20 - 24 inch range. Here's a big one I caught one trophy season on the Chesapeake
The Daiwa Procyon 1500 with a 6:1 gear ratio is my go to reel for pulling crank baits in fast moving water.
