Schooled by my brother again Shad fishing on the Susky. This time it was 5-0 , but I think I may have figured out what's going on. I don't do that much Shad fishing so I just grab a couple of rigs that look like they may do the job and head out the door.

This time he was fishing a dart with a flutter spoon dropper on mono. I was fishing the same style dart with another dart as the dropper on braid (no leader). He was getting fish on the dart as well as the spoon. I think I may have had one hit all evening on my rigs.

Conventional wisdom says that Shad are not leader shy but I'm not so sure. My brother was forthcoming with the technique he was using and I'm usually a pretty quick study. l still couldn't find any action. At the end of the evening, he switched to an alternate rig to try and catch some panfish. I picked up his rig with the dart and flutter spoon and had a solid hit on the first cast. Naturally it was on his tired dropper and the fish broke the line.

Are Shad leader shy, I'm not sure but you can bet that the next time we go Shad fishing, I'll be spooled up with some flouro and have a flutter spoon dropper on my rig.

My current fishing kayak is a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 100. I'm thinking about upgrading to a NuCanoe Frontier or Jackson Coosa.
Swimming Mullet
Gulp Swimming Mullets are my goto bait for most situations.
Heavier Rattletraps are still one of my favorite lures for stripers.
Green with Black Spots
I've been throwing Jitterbugs for Bass since the 1970's and don't plan on stopping anytime soon.
Tierra 1500
The Team Daiwa Tierra 1500 reel is one of my favorites, I've got 4 or 5 of them at this point. Too bad they've been discontinued.
My primary target is Striped Bass in the 20 - 24 inch range. Here's a big one I caught one trophy season on the Chesapeake
The Daiwa Procyon 1500 with a 6:1 gear ratio is my go to reel for pulling crank baits in fast moving water.
