Species:Bass, Striped

I went out this evening for a couple of hours fishing the islands. I managed to land about 6 Stripers up to around 16 inches. Even though the wind was calm, a strong outgoing tide made it difficult to work a jig so all of the fish were caught on my cheapo lipless crank.

I had forgotten the downside to the inexpensive lures that I use but tonight refreshed my memory. I had noticed the other week that I was losing a lot of fish because the hooks on my crankbait were bending while fighting larger fish. So the earlier this week I swapped out the hooks with high quality hooks, so I thought I was set.

Tonight while I was fishing a small bay, a fish showed himself by breaking the surface. He was in range so I made a cast at him. My cast was a little off but he hit hard and the fight was on. I knew he was a larger fish so I set the hook well but withing a few seconds he broke the surface and was gone. When I got the lure back to the boat the hook I realized that the hook was gone. The better hook allowed him to pull the eye right out of the lure. I guess the moral of the story is buy good lures.

My fishing boat Litttle Blue is a 1974 Starcraft Supersport. She is well past her prime but here's a photo of one in great shape.
Tarpon 10
Wilderness Systems
My current fishing kayak is a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 100. I'm thinking about upgrading to a NuCanoe Frontier or Jackson Coosa.
Swimming Mullet
Gulp Swimming Mullets are my goto bait for most situations.
Heavier Rattletraps are still one of my favorite lures for stripers.
Green with Black Spots
I've been throwing Jitterbugs for Bass since the 1970's and don't plan on stopping anytime soon.
Tierra 1500
The Team Daiwa Tierra 1500 reel is one of my favorites, I've got 4 or 5 of them at this point. Too bad they've been discontinued.
My primary target is Striped Bass in the 20 - 24 inch range. Here's a big one I caught one trophy season on the Chesapeake
The Daiwa Procyon 1500 with a 6:1 gear ratio is my go to reel for pulling crank baits in fast moving water.
