I went looking for some larger white perch today for my smoker. I was thinking the larger fish would be deeper, so I broke out some heavy blade baits and started working 7 to 14 feet of water.
I was getting a lot of hits on my blade, but it's pretty large and nothing was sticking. I started wishing for bigger fish. Do you know that old adage, about being careful about what you wish for?
I'm perch fishing with 7' ML rod , 2500 series reel, 15 pound braid and a 10' Flouro leader; I should be good even with those 15lb cats that like messing with me.
I thought I had snagged a log, and then it started spooling me. I've been here before, it's a big ray but I want my lure back. I play it, let it tire and start working it close to the boat.
When it got it in close, I realized something wasn't right. Where's it's tail? Time to grab the net. When I finally got visual, I was looking at a large black drum that was way too large for my net.
While trying to think of plan B, I brought the fish to close to the surface and as soon as he broke water, my leader snapped. I wish I had a photo because I know locals are going to doubt this fish story :)
