Dad and I wanted to get on a skiff to see what we can catch this time of year in the Western North Shore of Long Island…not our “annual skiff fishing adventure but more of us checking our spots this time of year. We started out trolling some deep diving lures. Dad had a Repala X Rap in the bunker color on his conventional; while I had a Tsunami metal lip in the yellow color that I bent the eye up to dive deep on my 6’6 spinning out fit…I was hoping a bass would go for my offering as it swam a bit higher than the X rap. Dad caught a 6lb Bluefish while we trolled, and noting noticed my metal lip. We were targeting Striped Bass, Bluefish, Porgy, and Fluke. We have spot’s in various places of the sound we like to catch them all. Dad and I visited them all for not even a tap. No fish touched the Bunker or clam we bought from Jacks, and surprisingly we saw none except one or two break the surface far apart from each other close to the middle grounds.
We had 15 to 30 minutes left before we needed to have the skiff back so we stopped at the Fluking grounds on the way in. The first Drift yielded me my first Fluke of the 2016 season…a keeper at 19” caught on my Skinner/gulp rig. Dad and I did all that we should have done to catch more fish but it just turned out to one of those nice days on the water with my Dad…But we each caught a fish so I can’t be mad…Stay Bent!
