This is what happens when you dead stick a bottom rig with #fish-bites and try to jig for stripers while on a drift. To add insult to injury, while I was unhooking this beast my jig rig was almost pulled overboard by another fish.

Fishing Report:
I went out for my first Maryland striper trip this morning. Since I fish shallow water, I don't expect too much in the summertime since most of the big fish are out hunting deep.
I missed a couple of large fish that burned my drag well before I could think about setting a hook, I started to wonder if some big stripers were working the shallows today.
The tide slacked and I start to slowly jig around structure hoping to pick up some larger white perch when I hooked up with this beast. At least now don't have to worry about this fish I missed.

With time to kill, Jimmy and I tried some chumming with a few bottom rigs. It was less success but then again we weren't quite on the fish either. It’s definitely something you’d have to commit the full day to do and it gets messy. I’d say chumming is great near drop offs and deeper water. Chumming is great for catching cat, blue, white perch and croakers. The smell of oily Menhaden seems to lure them in.

The wind really shut me down today. All I could manage was this catfish and a dink Striper. I thought this catfish was a Striper since he ran straight towards me heading for deeper water, something I find that a lot of larger Stripers do when hooked in shallow water. Most cats just roll and fight in my experience.

Fishing Report:
Here's my brother holding a large Catfish that he just caught on the dumbest lure I've ever seen. This lure had mechanical fins that moved by themselves. It worked like one of those old toys were you would pull a string to activate a little flywheel that provided some motion. With this lure, the string was pulled by the weight of the lure at the end of the cast.
Naturally, he caught the fish immediately after I told him in great detail what I thought of the lure.
