I have desired to catch a keeper Cod for two seasons now. I only get to “Cod fish" towards the end (October to the end of December) of my striper season. Last season I caught plenty cod but none were large enough to keep. In NY they have to be 22" (you can only keep 10) to keep. This fish was 23 ". It was a nice welcoming catch for me. I just wish I could continue cod fishing during the prime time of January to February but I need to take an off season...All good things must come to an end.
Dad and I had our hearts set on getting on the Island Current out of Rhode Island. Captain Chris canceled the trip due to the marine forecast of "gale force winds, and 10" sea's" we had to scramble and got back on the Captree Princess...they're not targeting cod like the Island current so I wasn't too happy. It was either reschedule or fish the last day I'll have until April 15th...Bottom fishing it is. The bite was slow all day. The 4" seas made it a bit bumpy but it died down...not sure why Capt. Chris never saw that. The last drop of the day produced one cod and one porgy for me. Others around me were capitalizing on the porgies...it just wasn't my day today but hey that's fishing. Catch'em up!
