I mainly do inshore (backbays, bays, rivers and within 15 mikes of the coast) in New Jersey. I try to make 2-3 out of state trips per year. My favorite fishing destination is the Florida Keys to which I've been numerous times. My fishing bucket list destinations include; Australia, The Seychelles, Cabo San Lucas and The Amazon. My son Jason is my frequent fishing partner.

First Fluke Trip Of 2019
My son Jason and I did our annual day after fluke season opens fluke trip on the Navesink River. Conditions were not ideal as the wind kept changing direction on us until it finally decided to come out of the south at 10-15. We combined to catch 17 fluke with each of us getting one keeper. Jason also got a cocktail bluefish. Everything on live bait, never once touched did we tie on a bucktail or use GULP. Only saw three other fluke caught. Fluke were spitting up grass shrimp. Fluke were warm to the touch and most were chunky. Upon filleting the bigger of the two keepers, we discovered it’s stomach full of grass shrimp and two small blue claw crabs.

I Got The Blues
A very good and steady bite on #2-3 bluefish throughout most of the outgoing tide today. I lost count after 10, most had double digits. Both hard and soft baits produced as long as it was either white or bone. Bite shut down at the end of the ebb. I fished through the very early flood but nothing. Returned later in the tide with my son and he got this nice #6-7 (biggest I’ve seen in this spot in a few days). — with Jason Sokol.

Still There But Smaller
Went to a different spot that I’ve been fishing lately as reports from there have been steady for a week, unfortunately I arrived on the wrong tide (they had been biting on the incoming and I arrived mid way thru the ebb) and the area was completely dead. So I went to where I had been catching them. Took about 30-40 minutes before I got my first one. Ended up with 7 in 2.5 hours (while missing another). Size was definitely smaller than what I had been catching there, as today they were in the #2-6 class (very similar to the size last year at this spot). Saw 3 others caught and two others lost. All mine were on a SP and out of the 3 others caught, 2 were also on a SP and one on a spoon (as were the 2 that were lost). Only good thing about the smaller size was that I was able to use my lighter 7’ rod which made the fight that much more enjoyable

Slower Day
Much slower day today. Not sure if it was because the fish are gone, water temperature dropped, the brisk northeast wind or what. I did manage 3, 2 on a SP minnow and one on a Rapala SXR-14S (fish in picture). Saw another 6 or so caught.

Singing The Blues
Had to wait until my second cast this morning to catch my first fish. Landed another 6, while missing another 4 bites. Average size of the bluefish today was smaller than yesterday, averaging #6-9. Fished for 2 hours, bite was very consistent the first hour+ then dropped off to almost nothing the last 45 minutes.

Monday Morning Blues
Great way to start the week. Hit one of my go to spots on the Manasquan and first cast yielded a #12.8 blue. In fact my first 6 cast results in 3 bluefish. Fish ranged from #8-12.8. Everything on a SP. Saw one caught on a topwater. Caught a total of 8 in 90 minutes.

#30 Striped Bass
Fished with my son Jason today aboard the Sea Hunter. Found the bass on top early and had a good pick most of the day with some better flurries as well as some lulls. Jason out fished me 5-1. His biggest of the day was this #30. His other ranged from the high teens to mid 20’s. My lone bass was around #20. 4 out of his 5 came on a 2 ounce white casting Mojo and his other (as well as mine) came on a 9” swim shad.

First Trip of 2019
Finally made my first trip of 2019, as I was itching to get in on the hot stripper bite. Went out on 4/17 in the afternoon. Fort to the grounds and found strippers blowing up over a large area. I ended the trip catching 7 stripers—5 of those keeper size to #20. I also missed another 12-15 bites. All fish were released and all caught on a 6” white swim shad.

First Keeper Blackfish On A Jig
After a day in the ocean, we came back inside and pickeome crabs. Tied off to the outside of a marina and I was able to cull this keeper from a bunch of shorts.

Jigging Blackfish
Started off fishing the inlet the bite wasn’t happening. Moved to me spot at the canal. Tide was just about high slack. Had a nice bite through the rest of the tide and through the slack. Bite backed off once the tide turned.

Canal Blackfish
First time that I hit the canal this fall. Bite was picky as they’d bite for 10-15 minutes then stop for the same length of time. My son did catch a 16” keeper on a jig. Fished from high water slack into the first half of the out going tide.

Bluefish Bonanza At The Reef
The bluefish jig bite was on fire today at the Shark River Reef. This is one of over 30 that I put over the rail today. In addition, I caught several dinner plate porgies and some out of season bluefish. Several false albacore and one Spanish mackerel were also caught.

Best Of The Year
Wasn’t sure what to expect after a week of rain and east wind. Water wasn’t as dirty as I had anticipated. Arrived for the last 2.5 hours of the incoming tide and left and hour into the outgoing. Had my first bite in @15-20 minutes and knew it was a good one. The result was this #5.41 24.5” fluke. Bite wasn’t as fast as my last few trips here but I did manage to catch 4 more (although no more keepers). Saw one other keeper caught and a good amount of shorts.
