Meet Skolmann
I mainly do inshore (backbays, bays, rivers and within 15 mikes of the coast) in New Jersey. I try to make 2-3 out of state trips per year. My favorite fishing destination is the Florida Keys to which I've been numerous times. My fishing bucket list destinations include; Australia, The Seychelles, Cabo San Lucas and The Amazon. My son Jason is my frequent fishing partner.

Best Of The Year
Wasn’t sure what to expect after a week of rain and east wind. Water wasn’t as dirty as I had anticipated. Arrived for the last 2.5 hours of the incoming tide and left and hour into the outgoing. Had my first bite in @15-20 minutes and knew it was a good one. The result was this #5.41 24.5” fluke. Bite wasn’t as fast as my last few trips here but I did manage to catch 4 more (although no more keepers). Saw one other keeper caught and a good amount of shorts.

No Mahi But We Found Some Fluke
One short of a two man limit. Started off looking for mahi but after checking the range buoy and pot hopping we didn’t see any signs we switched gears and dropped bucktails for fluke. Found a nice patch but couldn’t put that last one in the boat before the southeast wind kicked up creating a 2+ knot drift. Did catch and release a nice out of season sea bass. Saw several pods of dolphins when we broke the inlet and also came across a 6’+ blacktop or spinner shark later in the day.

Fish Smorgasbord
Enjoyable and fish filled day with Jason at the Inlet. I caught @15 fluke and one banded rudder fish. Jason had a smorgasbord with sea bass, a banded rudder fish, one big ugly star gazer, a nice snapper blue and some short fluke. He topped off his catch with this nice 22”+ fluke.

Couple of side notes; #1 we were there when they brought in the injured crew men from the sand dredging barge. Jason got a look at the injured and said one looked in bad shape., #2 We noticed a diver working east of us (nothing unusual about that)- however as time went on he not only worked his way down towards us but further off the wall until he was a good 30 feet out. To top it off, his dive flag got wet so any and all boats would have a difficult time in spotting. Anyone who knows the inlet knows that bend by the monument where both party boats and commercial boats exit and enter- well he was right in the middle. He got lucky that none of those came through, although a jet ski did run over his dive line that connected him to his dive buoy. Not only did he turn the bite off for those he was in front of (he was spear fishing). He became very confrontational when we informed him of the danger he was in and how he was effecting those of us who were fishing . I finally flagged down a passing state police boat who told him he was a dumb shit before telling him to either get out of the water or go closer to the wall. Darwinism.9/3/18.

Manasquan Inlet Variety
One of the over grown snappers I caught while fluke fishing in the inlet. Probably @1 pound +/-.

Manasquan Inlet Variety Pack
Timed my arrival to coincide with last 90 minutes of the incoming tide and fished through the first two hours of the outgoing. I noticed this seem to be when I had the best action there this summer-especially on the incoming where I found a small tip that forms where the fluke stack up. Ended up catching 12 fluke to 17”s but also all very chunky. In addition, I landed two over grown snappers and a few pin sea bass. Tons of bait being flushed out on the outgoing.

Inlet Fluking
One out of the 13 (all shorts but still fun) I caught earlier today. Fished from low water slack into the first 4 hours of the incoming tide. I scouted the area earlier in the week and noticed a nice little back eddy and rip line forms on the incoming with a nice color change. Fluke were right where they were supposed to be. All caught on live killies.

Tough Night
Encountered the worst conditions I faced all summer with a steady southeast wind against an outgoing tide. As a result, it was a tough bite. I was fortunate to land this one keeper to go along with just 4 shorts.

Had Better Days
Not one of my better days as for whatever reason I just couldn’t get the bites. Plenty of fluke were caught all around me and the boat, yet I only caught this lone keeper and 5 shorts. Those close to me had several keepers and double digit shorts. Oh well, better days ahead.

Almost A Triple Limit
Close to ideal drifting conditions as you can get (incoming tide with light northeast wind) made for a banner day of fluking. Boxed a solid #4 at the end of the first drift. Added two more to the box before the end of the second drift. Added a few shorts and another keeper (released) over the next two drifts. Bucktailed up a keeper (released) and short before there was a slight shift in the wind to the southeast which made for a slightly faster drift. Over the next few drifts I added 3 more keepers (all released), a few shorts, some sea robins and a big skate. Pink 4” GULP with bait was hot for me early then chartreuse. Not sure how many keeper fluke were caught but this is the total of the 6 others fishing around me. Note if they caught over the limit, they only kept their legal limit of 3;
6
5
3
2
1
0

I know of at least one other who caught 4 (again only keeping 3) and another 3 fluke limit both in the stern.

Hope to be back at it Sunday for magic hours.

Not To Be
Nailed this keeper fluke before we left the slip. Thought for sure at the very least I’d be able to add another once we left. Alas it was not to be as all I could muster up was about 10 shorts.

Morning Blues
Earlier in the day I hit a new spot (for me) on the Manasquan River. Landed four bluefish, this being the biggest at #4.5.

Nice Flukin’ Night
My son and and combined for 4 keepers tonight. I had my limit to 22.5”s that pulled the scale to #4.43-good enough to take the pool.

Same, Spot, Same Plug, Same Results
Fished the same spot that I’ve been fishing all spring with the same pattern plug and got the same results. Landed 6 bluefish out of the 8 that I hooked while also missing 4 other strikes. All were in the #2-4 class.

First Limits Of 2018
My son Jason and I rented a skiff, we each got our limit to 20”s on the Navesink today. Caught 22 total with 7 being keeper size but only kept our legal limit of 3 each. Caught them on GULP, bucktails, spearing and live bait.

The Blue Beat Goes On
Still catching the same sized bluefish, #2-5 at the same spot. Only thing that’s changed is the plug. I snagged the plug (the one a I posted a picture of a few days ago) on a buoy so I had to break out it’s replacement-same plug in the same pattern, now I just have to get battle scars on it😁

Pre Season Recon
Although NJ fluke season doesn’t open until tomorrow, I did some pre season recon at the spot I’ve been fishing for bluefish since I had heard that several fluke were caught in the previous days. My second cast yielded this fluke which would have just made legal size status had the season been open. After a quick photo it was released.

I Think They Like This Plug
As you can see, Manasquan River bluefish have a taste for the bunker pattern SP Minnow.Been using this one since last spring and it still produces today. I see no reason to scratch up a new one. The only thing I did was upgrade the rear stock treble to a VMC treble. I’m thinking about taking off both trebles and replacing them with inline single hooks.

One On The Sand
Hit one of my go to spots on the river this morning. Intel from yesterday said the river was on fire with bluefish from #3-12. U fortunately that was yesterday. Fished this spot for about an hour without a touch and only saw one #2-3 caught. Took a ride over to the inlet that that was completely dead as it was at the bottom of the tide. Returned to my original spot and a few casts later, I was rewarded. Had two other bumps but never came tight.

First Bluefish of 2018
Finally found some bluefish this morning. Last year at this time they were in thick. The average size was also much bigger. Got 3 in the #3-5 class. Two on a SP Minnow and one a X-Rap.
