Beach Bonito
After receiving a hot tip from a good friend of mine about a hot bonito bite in the inlet yesterday, I rearranged my morning schedule and arranged to meet him this morning. Things were not looking promising upon my arrival as the water was dirty with the last of the out going tide. I decided to fish for fluke until my friend arrived and proceeded to catch 3 short fluke in a 10-15 minute span. Upon his arrival, he informed me that the water will definitely clear up with the incoming tide—he was right. We started seeing birds working over a tide line and pods of bait with the occasional fish breaking among them. We waited for the fish to come to us but after 30 minutes they really didn’t move closer, so we moved closer to them. Was not the fast and furious bite he experienced yesterday (having almost constant action for 2 hours)-but we do catch a few.I ended up going 3 for 5 while also have a few followers and he went 2 for 4 with some followers. These were my firs “beach bonito”-as I’ve only caught them in the open ocean in the past. Only a few others were fishing for them without success 9although we were told someone had a few at the top of the inlet jetty). We caught all of ours on a 4” Tsunami Split Tail. As an aside, I saw a good amount of fluke being caught

Bonito Blood Bath Bonanza
My son and I jumped on a party boat out of Pt. Pleasant-steamed about 20 miles offshore. Took 5-10 minutes for the fish to find us, then it was game on. We each caught @50 bonito. This is a cooler shot after the first drift

Bonito Beatdown
Nice catch of Atlantic bonito (& some Spanish mackerel) caught on a day trolling trip to Barnegat Ridge. Everything caught on either a small Clark Spoon or small tuna feather.

One of the speedsters caught in Costa Rica. The mate cut this on up for sashimi right onboard, it was delicious.

JimmyBonito, now there's a fish I've never tasted. Are "full flavored" like spannies?

SkolmannMore tuna like in taste..not as fishy or oily.

JimmySounds good. Can you blacken them like tuna?

SkolmannI'm sure you can. I just cut them into nugget style pieces, rolled in sesame seeds and pan seared. Served them appetizer style with soy sauce and wasabi.

Here's some Bonito from the other coast. Caught in the Pacific tossing live bait from a head boat. West coast party boats are nothing like here east. Over head casting, live wells, numbered fishing spots, even cooks. Was a great experience.

Bonito trolled up on a black & red skirt with a ballyhoo. The mate made sashimi out of it right on the boat, delicious.
