Cod
Just found this picture from some time in the mid 2000's. Here is my son with a limit catch of both cod and winter flounder we put together on one of our trips to Quincy

My boat is ready to go for the new season but the wind and weather is not cooperating, so I decided to jump on a large head boat for a Codfishing trip today to wet a line. Conditions were wind against the tide, very hard to keep the boat on the wrecks, we were swinging all over. Wind blew, rain and fog was the weather for the day, tough fishing. But, I took this one home for dinner, and the pool money as well.

This baby cod was one of few hits at the first spot. I was fortunate to be one of the few. The captain had the rods rigged with banana pirk rig with treble hook. Our instruction was to let the lure go all the way until we hit bottom then jig the line erratically until something strikes. Very odd but okay. I didn't even know I had this guy hooked. I think the lure weighed more than he did.

On vacation with @jetfisher in Iceland. We selected a whale watching tour that had some fishing at the end of the trip. The Captain moved the boat to his third spot when all of the sudden everyone with a rod in struck. It was pretty awesome. The first on the right is jetfisher's catch. The crew filleted and grilled the fresh cod for all of us to eat. Amazing is an understatement.

JimmyAt some point I need to get up there and try for some cod since I've never had it fresh. Are there head boats that target cod?

Fishin DudeDuring this time of year some party boats advertise Cod, Pollock, Ling, & Porgies. The trips are deepwater wreck trips where you have a chance to catch any of the species, it's up to you to rig, bait, & fish according to what you would like to try to catch. My first choice is Cod & Pollock then I go from there. There are some charter boats that will specifically target Cod. Being smaller boats, they can fish smaller pieces than the larger boats, which need to put everyone on some structure. Believe it or not, as shown in some of my posted reports/photos, Codfish can be caught just about year round if you know where to look and have some knowledge of their seasonal patterns. When I get bored or the Inshore species bite slows, I make the run deep and try some Codfishing.

JimmyWhat's the best time of year to target cod in NJ on a head boat. Can you catch them shire fishing?
LikeReply 2 years
Fishin DudeCodfish are usally found in deeper water, around structure such as wrecks, rocks, etc. which makes it a boat fishing game. Winter is usally the better time of year, and you also have a chance of catching Pollock, which are the closest thing to Codfish, and I actually think it is tastier than Cod. I've never caught a Pollock during any other season.

Talklk about a greedy cod fish. After I took my hook out of this fish mouth I looked into its throat and it had someone else's very fresh bait, and hook lodged in its throat.

This photo was taken during a summer trip on a very warm day. I was fishing about 15 miles out of Manasquan Inlet on an artificial reef location. The codfish were there, they were hungry, so I invited them to dinner at my house.

After the first keeper was netted, we opened the in deck fish box and to our surprise, we forgot to bring the ice. The water temperature was too warm to keep the fish in the box without ice, and too warm to keep them in the livewell. So, doing what fishermen do sometimes, they had to go into the beverage compartment, since it held the only ice onboard.

In case you're curious, yes we still did drink the refreshments.

Cod on ice, makes dinner nice. Itching to get back out there and bend the rod. Doctor's and Physical Therapist, as well as my leg, say I'm still not ready yet.

Fishin DudeAs long as I heal well and push myself in therapy, I hope to have my Sea Legs back, allowing me to hit some of the Deepwater wrecks bouncing around on a boat in the beginning of March. Once I become a little more steady on my feet, and can walk without a cane, I hope to hit the inlet or canal , within a few weeks I hope.

williamHey Fishing Dude Get well soon. Are you catching charters out of N.J. for Cod or your own boat. And are they still running. I'm originally from N.J. and use to go out of Brielle and Pt. pleasant. any suggestions.

Fishin DudeI catch Cod from my own boat, but after she is winterized for the season I hit up the local party boat fleet for the long trip out to the deepwater wrecks. The Jamaica II, The Big Jamaica, and the Paramount, all out of Brielle, as well as the Voyager out of Point Pleasant, are my favorite winter rides.

This season has proven to be one of the best seasons ever. You're looking at another personal best fish for me in 2016. This time it's a Cod 30" long 15lbs my personal best so far. I'm hoping to get a few more Cod trips in before it's too cold to fish. Merry Christmas everyone...Stay Bent!

Shaka Antoine @william That's good to know. I don't know much about the NJ Boats other than the Jamaica fleet. But for Cod, I like the Viking when they are running the Block Island trips, Island Current from RI any of the Captree boats, and the Super Hawk out of Point Lookout. Those are the "party boats" I like for Cod this time of year.

Made it out today and was able to put together a mixed catch, including this nice Codfish. Ling, Scup/Porgies, a Purple Hake, Bluefish, and many Black Seabass that were returned as Seabass season is closed and reopens Oct.22nd.

A deck covered in cod and a bucket full of winter flounder is the end result of a day's fishing for my son and myself in Quincy Bay a decade or so ago.

Although the cod seem to have disappeared from the bay in recent years, the flounder fishing has been getting better in recent years.

We haven't fished up there in several years (& unlikely to go this year) but we're hoping to get up there in June of 2017.

A nice sunrise to start a great day of Cod fishing out in the Atlantic on the Big Jamaica. Although we didn't catch any keeper fish we still had a great time. The boat and crew were great as well and hope to get out there with them again soon!

Every few years my son & I travel up to Quincy, Mass. For a weekend of flounder fishing. The first few years we'd also catch market sized cod along with flounder-each of us limiting out on both species. The past few years there have been very few if any cod but the flounder bite is stronger than ever. This picture was from one of our first trips.
