8lb. test, no leader and a 2.0 true turn hook tied straight to the line. 18 minutes of back and forth battle. Landed without a net.

Another blast from the past..... While in Canada on a. fly in trip I caught this 18 lbs Northern Pike who was strong enough to pull and turn a 14 ft boat. And this not even considered a big one up there....

P.S. My phone keeps putting the present date for catch date for this pic.......

CanuckHey William! Nice Pike! I am from Canada and have caught many of those "old reliables". I've never caught one on a fly rod though. How long did that fight last? I am surprised he didn't cut the leader. Those teeth are sharp.

Jimmy @canuck Have you ever eaten a northern? I've seen some videos guys in Minnesota talking about how good they are once you learn how to filet the. Correctly.

williamFillets are tricky Northerns like any other Pike have a long Yshape bone that runs down the middle. It's easier to pull the bone out while eating it. They very good to eat.

Not content with just one. Our determined rookie promptly hooked and landed his second fish. Meanwhile my son and I are just washing baits. #bos-mon

I've mentioned before that quite often I am a better guide than a fisherman. For some reason that applies even more when I take onboard a guest like my son's friend here who had never caught anything before setting foot on my boat that day. This was his first fish he ever caught. #bos-mon

Like I said, lots of Pike. Some people like to eat them but not me. So most of them were thrown back. This one was hooked very deep amongst his gills. He wasn't bleeding much so I decided to try and keep him alive. Notice the gloves. Previous encounters with his cousins had persuaded me to protect myself. Anyway, that is a pair of needle nose pliers in my right hand that I inserted into his gill from the back side in order to get that lure out. I put him in the live well to make sure he would live after such a long time out of the water. About an hour later he was thashing around vigourously enough that I released him back into the river. #bos-mon

So all season I am regularly out on the river trying to catch Bass. Smallies, Largemouth it doesn't matter, I am after them. But mostly they are pretty safe from me. Having grown up fishing for trout in Nova Scotia I foolishly thought fishing is fishing and bass can't be that different from trout. It took me a long time to realize how wrong I was. Meanwhile I am catching Pike as if they wanted me to haul them in the boat. I swear I could have just stuck my hand in the water and caught one. I didn't even have to leave the dock.to catch this one. #bos-mon

This was the first fish I ever caught from my boat. I didn't have the proper gloves to handle him and found out why they are needed to remove hooks from these toothy creatures. Pike are plentiful up there and will bite almost anything. This one was caught on a red diamonds on yellow spoon. #bos-mon #rdys

Caught this guy on a white grub hooked to a 1/4 oz jig in three feet of water. I was just off the east end of Hay Island, about a mile away from where I lived at the time. #bos-mon #wgj
