Porgy time with the FEM Men
The FEM Men's fishing trip was a success! The captain called the trip early due to "weather" but we still had a blast...Porgys bending hooks too!

Yep, nice fat 16 inch Porgies. I could have filled the cooler with them, but was trying hard to catch some Codfish or Pollock, threw every trick in the book at them, but no luck, they just weren't there. Always next time I guess. It sure felt great to bend the rod.

williamWhen I was young me mom use to buy porgies and fry them up. I loved them until one of those pesky bones got caught in my throat.and that was the end of my porgy eating. It's been over years since i had one to eat. I do know they are good to eat.

Finally got back in the game again, the 28 degree weather, gusty winds, and rough seas couldn't stop me. Picked away at Porgies up to 16", caught and released a bunch of nice Black Seabass ( the season is closed), a few Ocean Pout and Dogfish rounded out the mix. It sure was great to be getting back to normal.

The bite seemed to die off quickly at one point. I was curious as to how would such a good bite come to a complete stop just like that...then I looked up and saw a huge seal looking at me while cruising the shore line. Suddenly I had my answer, and moved on to another spot with no success. I eventually came back to this spot in an hours time to find the bite even hotter as the sun began to set. This porgy in the photo is a good example. I guess I missed the first hit, he was hooked, and then went for my second hook (hook on the left with bait still on it) I had one whole clam for my efforts, and was down to the scallops, but when darkness fell they seem to bite more but I was out of bait. Six Porgy’s in all, abd missing a bunch was a great effort...the tide is right to fish now so I changed it up to fish for Stripers, and blues. This is definitely on the agenda for waiting for the tide to change here on...Stay Bent!

Surf caught Porgy’s are fun to catch. I had some time to kill while waiting on the tide to change at a spot I like to fish. I had just slept five hours on the beach so I was wide awake. I never caught porgy from shore so I said let me give this a shot here because I was unsuccessful on my last attempts at another location...Success! This was my first porgy in the surf, and now I'm hooked. I'll make sure to have my surf porgy set with me at all times when I'm in Montauk now...Stay Bent!

Porgy Up! The Porgy in Montauk, and on the Peconic are some of the largest I've ever seen. 15" Porgzilla's are a regular site to the locals, and taste the best to me. Most people I know like the smaller ones but not me. The smaller size porgy taste like mud to me. Always fun porgy fishing on Captain Thomas boat...Stay Bent!

Shaka AntoineI try not to buy fish from the fish market until the off season.

JimmyI know what you're saying but this is one species that's not that easy for me to catch and we wanted to try something new. My flat out favorite fish is Atlantic salmon and I'm always buying that for the same reason.

CanuckI've never tried porgy - perhaps I'll pick some up next time I am at the market. How do you cook them?

JimmyWe baked ours gutted head on with salt pepper and lemon. We kept it plain since we were trying it for the first time. I found it to be mild and flaky. All in all I thought it was pretty good for a milder fish.

Saturday was an annual fishing trip with the FEM Men's ministry in my church. That group of guys only like to fish for Porgy, and sometimes Sea bass. I'm no longer the president but I take the responsibility to put together our fishing trips. In times past our trips were less than satisfactory. last year we went to Boston and did okay with some catching and others none...this year was the trip they have been asking for.

last season on one of my fishing trips with the Celtic Grace out of Port Jefferson I over herd one of the mates talking to a regular about the insane Porgy bite that takes place the first, and second week of May. So I took note and decided I would put the Men onto that bite for our next trip. I am so glad I did that. We got on the Celtic quest out of Jamesport to fish the Peconic bay in picture perfect weather, and conditions. Many of the Men either reached the limit or came close. I've seen large Porgy’s in Montauk but the size of these Porgy’s easily had them beat. Kirk caught the biggest one in our group close to 19" The one I'm holding was 16" I couldn't ask for a better day on the water fishing with friends...Stay Bent!
