Tautog
Canal Blackfish
First time that I hit the canal this fall. Bite was picky as they’d bite for 10-15 minutes then stop for the same length of time. My son did catch a 16” keeper on a jig. Fished from high water slack into the first half of the out going tide.

Slow Day At the Canal
Cliff and I fished the canal for about 4 hours from 6:15-10:15am. We only managed 16 total tog, which is a very slow day for us there. We think it was because the water temp was up to 75 degrees today from all the warm weather. Cliff did manage the first keeper since tautog season reopened. A nice 16 inch fish pictured above.

Pt. Pleasant Canal 8-25-18
Cliff and I fished the canal today. Boat traffic was heavy, but we still had a good day. We fished most of the incoming tide and a little of the outgoing and managed 65 tautog and 1 schoolie bass all on green crab. All throwbacks today, we had four over 14 inches, but under 15.

SkolmannI’m going to start swing by the canal either on my way or coming from the inlet where I’ve been doing good with fluke. Heard there was a nice blitz of #2-4 bluefish there yesterday afternoon

SkolmannDo you ever fish the south jetty at Barnegat Inlet for blackfish ? I haven’t in a few years but might head back this year.

snick4444 @skolmann yeah i've heard the blues are starting to make their way back in. That's good that you are still getting fluke, down in Great Bay where I am it's starting to die off back bay wise. I have never fished the Barnegat Jetty, but this one guy i used to work with swears by it. He has had a couple close calls falling off the rocks though, maybe that's wise I stay away from it lol

First Tautog Trip of the Season
Since Tautog reopened on the 1st, Cliff and I decided to try out the canal today before it rained. We stuck it out through the first bad patch of rain and luckily left right before it got real bad. We fished all of the outgoing tide from 5:30am till about 11 landing 42 throwback Tautog. Not a bad day, especially since we usually do better with the incoming tide. A few oyster crackers and a sea bass we're also caught. A guy across the canal also hooked into what looked like a small bass.

Canal Keeper
Slower bite today but still managed to cull my limit of one keeper tog.

Can’t wait for the limit to increase in a few days.

Double Banger
Savage blackfish bite for me in the Point Pleasant Canal today. Every cast resulted in a bite. I even managed to bang out this double header.

Canal Blackfish
One of about a dozen tog (tautog, blackfish) that I caught today in 2.5 hours of fishing. Fished the last hour of the outgoing tide through the slack and the first 1.5 hours of the incoming tide. The one in the picture was the only one be of legal size but I still released it.

These two togs were caught 4-09-17 at the 2nd & 3rd island. I used blue crab. I caught them close to the pilon.
The water was smooth becoming rough in the evening.

It was a sunny day with a slight chill in the wind. I caught two togs at the 2nd island. I had to keep maneuvering the boat because of the wind, however in the end I was the victor with two togs for dinner😇🐟🐟

Fishin DudeI fished fron 8 - 10 am in the area of Manasquan Inlet. I'll tell you exactly where I catch other fish, names of reefs, wrecks , structure, even numbers, docks, piers, beaches, jettys, bait, rigs, colors, etc, but my Tog spots are held tight.

Fishin DudeThe Blackfish season here in NJ runs until the end of February, the current bag limit is 4 fish, minimum size of 15". There are a few open party boats out of my area, Point Pleasant, Belmar, and Atlantic Highlands, still fishing for them. The established, most popular charter boats in the area are booked solid over a year in advance. Then there are the 6 pack boats that have open dates/spots available that can be booked on short notice. A general rule of thumb is the captains that are still fishing this time of year are diehard, experienced fishermen who will put you on the fish, and most likely will pick up a rod and hook a fish or two themselves.

Here is a Tautog aka Blackfish smiling before being filleted. Their teeth look almost human, yet scary at times. Despite the teeth, you can actually stick your finger in their mouth and they will not bite you.

Went out for striper couldn't get into anything...up and down the beach large pods of bunker just outside casting distance.. Went down to the canal non stop blackfish action for about 20 minutes. Size range 12-16inches. All were released to become big boys.
