Winter Blues
The nicer of two specs I caught today, unfortunately they are closed until the 15th of June due to a winter fish kill.

JimmyI don’t get down as often as I’d like. I’ve never fished for the big Reds but I know of action. Do you fish ONC often?& #x0d; & #x0d; Welcome to Stack!& #x0d;

Finally a Fish
Finally a fish! I've been fishing all winter but not catching!

I took my yak to a local creek today and wasn't hooking up. I kept noticing splashes so close to the bank I figured they were frogs. Finally a splash within casting distance landed this short striper. Go figure!

Barely Legal
I had a fun day working structure on the Neuse to river. The barely legal puppy was the largest fish of the day.

One Stripe Away From a Skunk
Here in Oriental all town roads end at the water which creates tiny parks between the waterfront homes.

I spent an hour fishing then this evening and managed to beat the skunk with a little Striper who surprised me with a vigorous strike right at my feet as I was pulling out for the next cast.

Close But No Cigar
The winds are brutal down here in Oriental today. A lot of folks where fishing today but anyone who had the boat to cross the Neuse River did so to get to the lee shore. My old boat is not that seawortht so I stayed local and worked in heavy wind. This puppy was the best fish caught today but was still 1 inch shy of being a keeper.

Dock Puppy
Stepped out for an hour and fished a couple of docks down the street from my house. I managed to pull this little guy out from under a dock.

I stepped a little closer to the dock for a better shot and found some fire ants the hard way, by touch. Ouch!

It was a beautiful day on the water but a tough fish. I spent 6 hours running around looking for warm water before hooking up with this this 17.5 spec in spot that produced a short yesterday.

#gulpswimmingmullet on a 3/8 jighead was the ticket today. The wind was perfect for drift fishing today and that's how this guy was hooked.

Shaka AntoineNice fish. How do they taste? Nice Hoodie!
LikeReply 1 year
JimmyI'd say they are similar to striper in taste. I need to do a side by side with stripers to determine which I actually prefer. I lean towards the specs since I can't catch them in my local fishery and only have them when I'm in Oriental NC.

I managed a short fish this morning before rain set in. I was surprised to land my first small white perch here in Oriental, I didn't know they were here.

I'm finding the specs out of oriental NC to be spotty, no pun intended lol.

Long slow drifts with a twitch bait in tow seems to be the ticket for me. I've yet to find any fished stacked up, just a lone fish here and there.

I'd expected these barely legal fish to be schooled up but there acting like the larger specs normally do, flying solo.

williamHey Jimmy. Me and my buddy @coachcabb want to try Oriental Fishing but it must be a small place and hard to find on the map.
LikeReply 1 year
JimmyIt's a decent sized town around 700 people. What's probably what's throwing you off is that it's on the innerbanks of NC. Go due west across the Pamlico Sound from Ocracoke. Oriental is about 3 creeks up the Neuse on it's western shore.

JimmyThere's good fishing year round if you know what you're doing. I'm far from being an expert as my last few stories have shown lol. @baldheadedbobby what's your opinion on the best time to fish out of ONC or the surrounding areas?

BaldheadedBobbyCoach Cabb we have different seasons for different fish. Below are some ideas Trout: October thru April, we can catch them year round Reds: most anytime Flounder: summer to October Giant redfish 40"-50": August and September Stripers: keeper season is Oct-April Cobia: May-June Give me a call and good luck. bobby @baldheadedbobby.com

I had a tough day of spec fishing today. I had a couple of taps that I'm pretty sure where specs and one follower that I know was a spec but I couldn't close the deal.

A couple of dink stripers and this little puppy were all a could manage to hook up with.

I managed one small spec today from my boat. I'm a very big fan of speckled trout so even a small 15 inch fish like this is always a welcome dinner guest.

JimmyThanks for the update, do you think all that water from hurricane Matthew is throw things out if whack for a little while?
LikeReply 2 years
BaldheadedBobbyEverything is pretty dirty but we are still catching. The water is still about 2' high. The creeks and river upstream are starting to recede which should raise our water a little more. I think the big difference is that we have not had a cold stun kill in the winter in a couple of years. We caught a lot of small trout last fall and winter. They are keepers now.

I xtook my rod on a dog training walk to the kayak dock down the street from our house. While talking to another fisherman I got a couple of tugs right at the dock.

I told him confidently, just a pinfish. I dropped in again at the the same spot and hauled out this little puppy. Well that was s little embarrassing!

Nice 23" redfish in the net. He ran underneath the pier in front of us but we managed to muscle him out with our 15# Finn braided line. Sal had him for dinner that night at M&M's restaurant. It's always fun taking young anglers out and watching them catch their first red.
