NJ > Manasquan-River
Morning Blues
Earlier in the day I hit a new spot (for me) on the Manasquan River. Landed four bluefish, this being the biggest at #4.5.

Same, Spot, Same Plug, Same Results
Fished the same spot that I’ve been fishing all spring with the same pattern plug and got the same results. Landed 6 bluefish out of the 8 that I hooked while also missing 4 other strikes. All were in the #2-4 class.

The Blue Beat Goes On
Still catching the same sized bluefish, #2-5 at the same spot. Only thing that’s changed is the plug. I snagged the plug (the one a I posted a picture of a few days ago) on a buoy so I had to break out it’s replacement-same plug in the same pattern, now I just have to get battle scars on it😁

Pre Season Recon
Although NJ fluke season doesn’t open until tomorrow, I did some pre season recon at the spot I’ve been fishing for bluefish since I had heard that several fluke were caught in the previous days. My second cast yielded this fluke which would have just made legal size status had the season been open. After a quick photo it was released.

I Think They Like This Plug
As you can see, Manasquan River bluefish have a taste for the bunker pattern SP Minnow.Been using this one since last spring and it still produces today. I see no reason to scratch up a new one. The only thing I did was upgrade the rear stock treble to a VMC treble. I’m thinking about taking off both trebles and replacing them with inline single hooks.

One On The Sand
Hit one of my go to spots on the river this morning. Intel from yesterday said the river was on fire with bluefish from #3-12. U fortunately that was yesterday. Fished this spot for about an hour without a touch and only saw one #2-3 caught. Took a ride over to the inlet that that was completely dead as it was at the bottom of the tide. Returned to my original spot and a few casts later, I was rewarded. Had two other bumps but never came tight.

First Bluefish of 2018
Finally found some bluefish this morning. Last year at this time they were in thick. The average size was also much bigger. Got 3 in the #3-5 class. Two on a SP Minnow and one a X-Rap.

Another gator bluefish from yesterday. This was the first of over a dozen I caught. As you can see it fell a Rapala X-Rap.

One of several big bluefish that I caught on topwater. The plug in the picture accounted for 4 before I lost it trying to boat another fish.

One of over a dozen bluefish I caught this morning. Fish ranged in size from #6 to the lower teens. Caught 2 on a sub surface swimming minnow type plug and the rest on topwater poppers. Bite was slow and scattered at first but we located a them on a flat with the water depth of no greater than 3-4', for over an hour my partner (who also caught over a dozen) we each had either a blow up or hooked up on every cast.

A close up of Blueclaws in the bucket for a trip to the kitchen. During the season, I usally drop my crab pot in the river on my way to the inlet, then pull it on my way back in. Leaving it unattended is risky as I've had 3 pots stolen over the years.

They can't always be big fish. I caught this fish in the Manasquan River, it's the smallest Fluke I've ever caught.

SkolmannI love shallow water fluking in the Manasquan. I use my 6' trout spinning rod with #10 braid and a 1/2-3/4 ounce bucktail with a teaser rigged 10"s above it. My biggest river fluke is #7.5. Caught more than my share of keepers. On the flip side, I've had days were I caught 125+ with not one keeper. But those days are just as fun to me as the rod is kept bent all day and on the scaled down tackle the are a blast to catch.

Fishin DudeMy boat is the Asalt Weapon. If you ever see me out there, give me a shout, I've got the radio scanning most of the time. When time is short, I'm fishing the banks or inlet when fishing the river. It's going to be coming alive real soon.

SkolmannI'm boat-less now. My son however does have an older Pro Line he keeps up in The Highlands, but he is also selling it. Our plan is to get a new boat that we'll jointly use in the summer of 2018 (after paying for my daughter's wedding on 6/22/18). So he'll be fishing party and open charter boat trips until then. We'll also hit some of our favorite shore spots. If you are ever looking to get a crew together I'm more than happy to chip in on expenses.

Part 2 of my hour break on the Manasquan River:
While fishing the bridge with my Bass Kandy Delights this morning, I nailed this Striped Bass. Sorry for the cut off photo, I now realize that I need to add one of those "Selfie Stick" things to my fishing arsenal for those times when I'm fishing solo.

Had an hour to fish the last of the incoming tide late this morning from shore on the Manasquan River. I was throwing a white Bass Kandy Delight on a 3/4 Oz jighead. Pulled in this Blue on the 5th cast.
