Off The Chart Topwater Bite
My son Jason got out on his buddy boat and the two of them put absolute beat down on schoolie sized striped bass. They both caught 20-25 striped bass from 22-28”s in under a hour. At one point my son made 10 casts and caught 10 stripers. Everything caught on Zara Spooks. Figures that I got caught in traffic on the way home and couldn’t make it.

Magic Hour Topwater Striper
Here’s one of my striped bass from last evening’s light tackle fluke/striper bass trip. Savage striper bite on Zara Spook plugs.

Manasquan River Magic Hour Trip
Jason and I had a great trip this evening aboard Reel 17 with Capt. Stephen Moran at the helm. Spent the first few hours doing some light tackle fluking. Probably put 60 fluke in the boat up to #4 Always fun catching fluke on tackle better suited for trout. Once the sun got low, we switched gears and went on the hunt for stripers. First spot was game on as we encountered a savage top water bite with bass from 24-29”s landing 20 in a little over a hour’s time. If you look closely at the picture of Jason holding up one of his bass, you’ll see another bass exploding on my plug.

Manasquan River Fluke
Plenty of fluke in Manasquan Inlet. Fished about 90 minutes between rain showers and landed a total of 10 fluke (all shorts 13-16”s). Fished from a hour before high slack to just after high slack. Bigger fish hit closer to slack. Everything on a single killie fished on a light wire hook on a #20 leader. Guy fishing next to me outfished me 2:1 using a hi-lo rig tied on #15 flurocarbon with a white 4” white GULP swimming minnow on top and a pearl GULP jerk shad on the bottom with 1 ounce sinker on the bottom.

Tough Day
Hit all 3 spots that I scouted and saw fish caught at all 3 on Monday;
Started west to east.
-First spot (my go to spring bluefish and early season fluke spot: plugging produced nothing.
-Second spot: Threw soft plastics (the bait that produced on Monday) produced nothing.
-Third spot (inlet): Got some killies to try some fluking but with a hard incoming tide it wasn’t ideal-went fishless (did see one small fluke caught).
-Went back to the second spot another 30 minutes yielded nothing.
-Returned to the first spot and decided to try for fluke with the left over killies. Rig I was using was a 3-way with a 4 inch dropper for the sinker and a 30” length of #20 leader with a snelled 1/0 octopus hook. First cast resulted in this #5 which I hooked perfectly in the corner of the mouth-thus I was able to land it without be bit off. Few more casts with killies went fishless. Back to plugging, throwing various plugs-once again fishless. Decided to try for fluke again before I left, first cast resulted in a short fluke. Called it quits.

I Got The Blues
A very good and steady bite on #2-3 bluefish throughout most of the outgoing tide today. I lost count after 10, most had double digits. Both hard and soft baits produced as long as it was either white or bone. Bite shut down at the end of the ebb. I fished through the very early flood but nothing. Returned later in the tide with my son and he got this nice #6-7 (biggest I’ve seen in this spot in a few days). — with Jason Sokol.

Still There But Smaller
Went to a different spot that I’ve been fishing lately as reports from there have been steady for a week, unfortunately I arrived on the wrong tide (they had been biting on the incoming and I arrived mid way thru the ebb) and the area was completely dead. So I went to where I had been catching them. Took about 30-40 minutes before I got my first one. Ended up with 7 in 2.5 hours (while missing another). Size was definitely smaller than what I had been catching there, as today they were in the #2-6 class (very similar to the size last year at this spot). Saw 3 others caught and two others lost. All mine were on a SP and out of the 3 others caught, 2 were also on a SP and one on a spoon (as were the 2 that were lost). Only good thing about the smaller size was that I was able to use my lighter 7’ rod which made the fight that much more enjoyable

Slower Day
Much slower day today. Not sure if it was because the fish are gone, water temperature dropped, the brisk northeast wind or what. I did manage 3, 2 on a SP minnow and one on a Rapala SXR-14S (fish in picture). Saw another 6 or so caught.

Singing The Blues
Had to wait until my second cast this morning to catch my first fish. Landed another 6, while missing another 4 bites. Average size of the bluefish today was smaller than yesterday, averaging #6-9. Fished for 2 hours, bite was very consistent the first hour+ then dropped off to almost nothing the last 45 minutes.

Monday Morning Blues
Great way to start the week. Hit one of my go to spots on the Manasquan and first cast yielded a #12.8 blue. In fact my first 6 cast results in 3 bluefish. Fish ranged from #8-12.8. Everything on a SP. Saw one caught on a topwater. Caught a total of 8 in 90 minutes.

Earlier in the day I hit a new spot (for me) on the Manasquan River. Landed four bluefish, this being the biggest at #4.5.

Same, Spot, Same Plug, Same Results
Fished the same spot that I’ve been fishing all spring with the same pattern plug and got the same results. Landed 6 bluefish out of the 8 that I hooked while also missing 4 other strikes. All were in the #2-4 class.

The Blue Beat Goes On
Still catching the same sized bluefish, #2-5 at the same spot. Only thing that’s changed is the plug. I snagged the plug (the one a I posted a picture of a few days ago) on a buoy so I had to break out it’s replacement-same plug in the same pattern, now I just have to get battle scars on it😁

Pre Season Recon
Although NJ fluke season doesn’t open until tomorrow, I did some pre season recon at the spot I’ve been fishing for bluefish since I had heard that several fluke were caught in the previous days. My second cast yielded this fluke which would have just made legal size status had the season been open. After a quick photo it was released.

I Think They Like This Plug
As you can see, Manasquan River bluefish have a taste for the bunker pattern SP Minnow.Been using this one since last spring and it still produces today. I see no reason to scratch up a new one. The only thing I did was upgrade the rear stock treble to a VMC treble. I’m thinking about taking off both trebles and replacing them with inline single hooks.

One On The Sand
Hit one of my go to spots on the river this morning. Intel from yesterday said the river was on fire with bluefish from #3-12. U fortunately that was yesterday. Fished this spot for about an hour without a touch and only saw one #2-3 caught. Took a ride over to the inlet that that was completely dead as it was at the bottom of the tide. Returned to my original spot and a few casts later, I was rewarded. Had two other bumps but never came tight.
