Tough Day
Tough day today as you had to work for your bites. I felt good landing this bonito and keeper sea bass both caught on a hammered 2 ounce jig. Also caught a trash fish grand slam (bengal, skate, sea robin & sun dial).

Bonito, False Albacore & Spanish Mackerel—Oh My
Long story short. My son and I had a great day. Before we left the dock, I told my son that I had 2 goals; 1-to catch at least one bonito, one false albacore (little tunny) and one spanish mackerel & 2-to catch at least 1 fish on each of the 3 rods I brought. Caught the spanish mackerel and bonito within the first 15 minutes. Added the false albacore (pictured) not long after. I ended the day with 8 false albacore, 3 bonito and 1 spanish mackerel. My son had 12 false albacore and 1 spanish mackerel.

Jumbo Bonito
This is the biggest bonito ( #6) that my son caught yesterday aboard his friend’s Stephen’s boat. They caught @9 false albacore, countless bluefish, 12+ bonito, 1 keeper blackfish, 2 spanish mackerel, 4 triggerfish and 4 sea bass.

Bonito Blood Bath Bonanza
My son and I jumped on a party boat out of Pt. Pleasant-steamed about 20 miles offshore. Took 5-10 minutes for the fish to find us, then it was game on. We each caught @50 bonito. This is a cooler shot after the first drift

There She Blows
Fishing was very slow on Black Friday for the large crowd aboard the Golden Eagle party boat. Only five striped bass were caught (3 on artificials and 2 on live bait). We did have a humpback whale around use most of the day spouting and feeding on bunker. I was fortunate enough to be able to get a picture of the one time it breached.

Double Deluxe Bluefish
A pair of oversized bluefish. Jigging was fair with a few spurts of good. All bluefish were in the #15-20 class.

Double Hook Up
Both my son (right) and I are hooked up with #15+ bluefish. Some don’t like catching blues but I find them to be some of the hardest fighting fish in the sea.

One of two false albacore (Little Tunny) from yesterdays trip. Also had 3 bonitos to go along with them. Just a side note, false albacore are not in the tuna family but in the mackerel family.

Bonito Beatdown
Nice catch of Atlantic bonito (& some Spanish mackerel) caught on a day trolling trip to Barnegat Ridge. Everything caught on either a small Clark Spoon or small tuna feather.

Thought that I had a good day being part of a six man crew that limited out on fluke until I saw this cart of fish brought to the cleaning table; 3 yellowfin tuna in the #60-70 range, 2 mahi to #15 and a #130-150 class broadbill swordfish. Al caught offshore of NJ in the Hudson Canyon.

We Almost Needed ABigger Boat
They say that shark fishing is hours of boredom drifting followed by a hour of work...well with this #315 thresher we had lines in at 8:05 AM and were hooked by by 8:15. Had it to the boat on 5 different occasions before on the 6th time we were able to leader it and stick a flying gaff in her at 11:45. Took a few more minutes to get a tail rope on and then she was ours.

SkolmannLet's just say that thresher steaks make some mighty fine eating.

CanuckHow did you prepare them? I've only ever had smoked shark. It wasn't good but that could have been the chef/smoker

SkolmannWe grilled the steaks (taste similar to swordfish).

JimmyDo you ever eat these as Sashimi?
LikeReply 2 years
Fishin DudeYes, fresh off of the fish onboard the boat on the ride back in, as well as the next day or two. After that I make sure it's seared.

JimmyAny special precautions when fileting or handling? I can only imagine how good tuna that fresh must be!
LikeReply 2 years
Fishin DudeAll Tuna must be bled and iced immediately and when cleaning keep all internal guts & fluids from contaminating the flesh, which should be practiced on all fish actually. The government requires ALL fish that will be commercially served raw to be frozen to kill bacteria & parasites. This fish was just bled and iced, as well as with many other raw fish that I've eaten onboard boats on many trips, as well as fresh caught fish at home. Risky? Maybe, but I've never gotten sick and enjoyed some great fish. ONLY EAT SALTWATER FISH RAW, NEVER FRESHWATER SPECIES!

Hopefully it won't be long now, especially after a mild winter. This pair of striped bass was jogged up in early April following a mild winter.

Attended the NJ DEP Press Conference this morning at Fisherman's Supply in Point Pleasant. Commissioner Bob Martin along with federal and state law makers, private and commercial captain's, and reprensitives from recreational fishing interests such as the Recreational Fishing Alliance, Jersey Coast Angler's Association, New Jersey Outdoor Alliance, New Jersey Federation of Sportsman's Clubs,United Boatsmen, and Save the Summer Flounder Fishery Fund, spoke about their official opposition and plans to fight the proposed federal changes / 49% reduction to the 2017 NJ Fluke Regulations by the ASMFC.

It was a cold, windy morning with about 200+ Fishermen, Captain's, Business Owners, and Press in attendance. This is a start, and I hope that we are sucessful in our fight to change the Federal Regulations, which want to give NJ Angler's a minimum size limit increase from 18" to 19" ( next door in Delaware Bay they have a 17" minimum size), a reduced bag limit from 5 fish to 2 fish, and only a 51 day long season. Nice to know that we have some amazing people on our side.
