Summer is almost over!
With summer winding down and kiddos going back to school soon, it was still an absolutely beautiful weekend at Fort Fisher. This flounder was an inch too small to keep but a good day none the less!!

Love fishing with this kiddo! To my surprise we pulled in a flounder and got a good picture before release. It was the third time I've taken him fishing, but up until now we haven't caught anything in the small lakes we've been at. Super excited to at least bring this in!

This little guy accidentally swam into one of my bottom rigs but was only slightly hooked in one of his flippers. Took the hook out very easily and snapped a quick shot before a safe release! I was worried it had swallowed the hook and all these tourists are going to see me man handle this little guy to remove it but it turned out to be not a problem at all.

After a promising Friday evening, The low pressure gave me a hard time Saturday, the only thing I caught was this little guy. I think it's funny how they grab on to hook and just go along for the ride! Will be back at it next weekend and the weather looks warm, sunny, and calm. Looking to find success out in the kayak.

JimmyAny idea of what kind of crab is that? I'll add them to our species list.
LikeReply 2 years
AlgernonI think it is a very young blue crab that has yet to show its colors. This one was a male as indicated by the unique pattern on their underside.

Whiting, croaker, hard tail etc. Repping the stackfish gear while getting after it! It was a super raw Saturday, windy, sand blown, but a bad day of fishing is Better than a good day of Anything else. The storm produced some gnarly surf conditions but I persevered for a couple hours. I'll be back into the fray next weekend! Can't get enough. Stack em up.

Man the blow toad bite really picked up close to the noonish high tide today. Caught a total of seven this weekend but ended up keeping these four. Gonna cook em up for the first time thanks to someone on here who mentioned eating them, else I never would have thought of doing it! It was a damp, windy, chilly camp out at the beach, but unexpected that these guys showed up en masse and I'm super pumped to get em In the frying pan!

Two inches under size. One of two I pulled from the suds. Always surprised at how close these things are to the beach! Free running sinker and cut mullet on a 6/0 was the magic bullet yesterday.

AlgernonOh man, that's a bit of a ways from my stomping grounds way down near Wilmington. All I manage to do is rig up some shrimp and dunk it in the suds then hope for the best!

I have a distaste for selfies but here's one anyways. This little guy had to go back, but it was my first black drum of the fall. Cheers and fish on.

JimmyWelcome back! Have you eaten any of those black drum? @baldheadedbobby gave me some tips on catching them down in Oriental NC and I may try catch some for my table.

Warm fall sunrise yielded one Pompano and one bluefish on the same rig. Always a joy to be on the beach at dawn. The rest of the day yielded a few more blues And black drum, all under size as my luck would have it. Headed back this weekend for some more!

Sometimes it's not the size of the catch but the thrill of the hunt. Precarious surf and weather made me thankful to at least pluck this little mullet from the sea. Taken using a pompano rig and shrimp flavored fish bites.

JimmySo true about the thrill of the hunt! I love fish bites and will be using them more this summer since I'm going to try to do more bottom fishing up here on the Chesapeake. I'll be targeting white perch, snappers and croakers with them.

AlgernonJust discovered fish bites this year. Reminds me of bubble gum. Haven't tried chewing on any of it yet.

Despite my best efforts to attract a shark, my bait remained untouched until 11 pm when we decided it was more important to drink cheap Mexican beer around a fire than fish. Gonna give it another shot in two weeks. Both Shark fishing and cheap beer.

Sunrise at Freeman Park, Carolina Beach NC. Out for flounder and blue fish but escaped with a little Sharpnose shark and mullet. Still caught a pretty sick buzz. Beautiful weekend.

Originally thought to be a lemon shark, upon further inspection I think it is actually a finetooth shark. Caught while beach camping at freeman park in Carolina Beach.

Was using a mullet filet on 12/0 circle hooks, bait was dropped by kayak about a quarter mile off shore.

Was reeling in this little guy when suddenly the line went slack. Bummed when I thought the fish got away, then much to my surprise it was bitten clean off by uh something bigger I guess. I suspect it was a bull but I can't be positive.

Catch was made 26 July 2016

Shark fishing at freeman park yielded this Goliath red! Last trip of the season ended pretty nicely. Catch was made 23 October 2016

Had a mix of pork chop and mullet filet on the 10/0 circle hooks. The pork was magic and cheaper than mullet... Damn fish eat better than I do. They don't drink as much beer though.
